Vyborg Shipyard has signed a contract on construction of blocks of an icebreaking vessel

On 12 February Vyborg Shipyard has signed a contract on construction of blocks of an icebreaking vessel design by Kvaerner Masa-Yards.

The Finnish party — Kvaerner Мasa-Yards Turku last year won the tender for construction of an icebreaking vessel for Sakhalin 1 oil field being developed by the American group EXXON MOBILE.
This is the first icebreaking vessel for Russian offshore fields which construction has been already started.

Length — 99.90m
Beam — 21.23m

For construction of icebreaking vessels capable of operation at ice thickness over 1,5 m special steel grades are required with thickness up to 50 mm as well as the most complicated welding technologies and qualified personnel. It served a decisive argument for Кvaerner Мasa-Yards at selecting of a Russian partner. Within the framework of the contract signed by the Finnish shipyard with the Customer — Russian content in the project has been one of the basic requirements. Right after signing of the contract a working group including specialists of Kvaerner Masa-Yards and Vyborg Shipyard has been created. In order to develop technology of welding of special steel Quality Plan was issued.

Delivery of blocks to the Customer will be performed in two shipments in June and August.

Results of the tender on construction of 3 icebreaking vessels for Sakhalin 2 oil field will be announced on 19 February, wherein Vyborg Shipyard is participating together with other shipbuilding companies.
