Vyborg Shipyard laid the keel for the port icebreaker
The keel-laying ceremony of the port icebreaker project Aker Arc 124 ordered by FSUE Atomflot took place at Vyborg Shipyard (part of United Shipbuilding Corporation) on September 27th, 2016.
General Director of Vyborg Shipyard Alexander Solovyev gave a warm welcome to the guests . He commented: "We’ve got a good tradition. Over the past 4 years for the sixth time we are getting together to lay the keel of the next icebreaker. The keel-laying means that the real work has begun. We have 2 years ahead to prove once again that Vyborg Shipyard knows how to build quality ships in time and according to the customer requirements. "
The ceremony was attended by Deputy Chairman of the Government of Leningrad region, Dmitry Yalov, General Director of Atomflot Vyacheslav Ruksha, Director of Department of United Shipbuilding Corporation Igor Shakalo, suppliers, representatives of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping and partners of Vyborg Shipyard. Director of RS Baltic Branch Michael Kutejev commented: "This icebreaker project is a new word not only in Russian but also in the world shipbuilding. On its example one can clearly see a technological breakthrough of our plants which are capable of building ships of immense complexity with the state-of-the-art propulsion system for operation in the Arctic Regions. The Register has always been the conductor of the innovative engineering solutions in shipbuilding and in the future is ready to promote the realization of such projects. "
The Vessel is a port icebreaker of about 12 MW intended for supporting the operability of LNG carriers in approach channel and in the port of Sabetta on the Yamal Peninsula. The distinctive feature of the Vessel is an innovative propulsion system with four independently operating azimuth thruster propulsion units about 2/5 MW each, two in the stern and two in the bow allowing the most efficient ice performance in ahead and astern direction, maneuvering and performing special tasks in the water area of the port of Sabetta where is under way construction of LNG plant as part of Yamal LNG project. The Vessel length is 84.3 m, width - 21.3 m, draught - 6.5 m, deadweight in view of deck cargo at maximum draught - not less than 2000 tonnes. Ice performance of the Vessel is 1.5 meters.
