Launching ceremony of an icebreaker project 21900M took place at Vyborg Shipyard
Today, on 29th April, at Vyborg Shipyard (a member of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) there was held launching ceremony of the prototype icebreaker "Vladivostok" in a series of diesel-powered icebreakers project 21900М.
Heads of Federal Maritime and River Transport Agency, Rosmorport, United Shipbuilding Corporation, Russian Register of Shipping as well as representatives of local authorities, customers, suppliers and other partners of VSY attended the ceremony.
General director of Vyborg Shipyard Alexander Solovyev gave a warm welcome to the honorary guests. «The Shipyard faced one of the complicated tasks in the history of the enterprise. In spite of that fact that the vessel will be handed over to the Customer only in a year, now it is possible to say with confidence that Vyborg Shipyard is managing successfully with the order», - commented General director.
Elena Shchegoleva, Deputy Head of Vladivostok City Administration, was nominated Godmother of the prototype icebreaker. By the long-standing sea-borne tradition saying “Name you Vladivostok. Fair seas” she crashed a bottle of champagne against the board of the launched vessel. After that the christening ceremony of the icebreaker was carried by the priest of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral of Vyborg Gennady Ponomarev.
Hull assembly of the icebreaker "Vladivostok" was carried out on board the semi-submersible barge “Atlant” built at the Shipyard for construction of this newbuilding. The icebreaker will be also launched from the barge, for this purpose the barge with the icebreaker on board will be towed off to the deep water of the Vyborg gulf. After that the icebreaker will be towed back to the quay wall of the Shipyard for carrying out completion works. Hull assembly of the third out of the series icebreaker “Novorossiysk” is scheduled to start in the beginning of May on board the barge “Atlant”. The second icebreaker project 21900 M is being under construction in cooperation with Arctech Helsinki Shipyard.

On October 17, 2012 the keel-laying ceremony of the prototype diesel-powered icebreaker project 21900M “Vladivostok” took place at Vyborg Shipyard JSC. In December 2012 two other icebreakers project 21900M were laid at the Shipyard. The icebreaker project 21900M has icebreaking capacity up to 1,5 m. The vessel is intended for independent ice escorting of heavy-tonnage vessels, towage, fire fighting on floaters and other facilities, salvage and assistance to distressed vessels, transportation of cargos.
