VSY handed over to the customer the world’s most maneuverable port icebreaker
On October 18, 2019, Vyborg Shipyard (VSY, part of United Shipbuilding Corporation) hosted a handover ceremony of the Ob port icebreaker project Aker ARC 124 (NB 232) ordered by FSUE Atomflot.
At Vyborg Shipyard there was signed a Protocol of delivery of the Ob port icebreaker to FSUE Atomflot (corporate member of Rosatom State Corporation). The document was signed by the Director General of PJSC Vyborg Shipyard Alexander Solovyev and the Director General of FSUE Atomflot Mustafa Kashka.
The guests were welcomed by the Director General of Vyborg Shipyard, chairman of the Leningrad Regional Branch of LLC Russian Engineering Union Alexander Solovyev “Dear friends! Today we are celebrating the delivery of the newly-built vessel, which in the coming weeks will start operations in the port of Sabetta. It is very difficult to part from the icebreaker, which has already become our family. I wish the vessel and her crew fair winds and following seas! ”
The USC Pesident Alexey Rakhmanov thanked the team of Vyborg Shipyard for the high workmanship and specially focused on the unique features of the vessel. “The distinctive feature of this icebreaker is its maneuverability ensured by the innovative propulsion system. I hope the customer will duly appreciate the unique properties and the lead ship will be followed by the first serial one. ”

The first non-nuclear icebreaker of Rosatomflot is the only one in its class. The vessel is equipped with a state-of-the-art electric propulsion complex and innovative electric power system. ”
The Ob is the world’s first port icebreaker with four propulsors designed by the Finnish engineering company Aker Arctic Technology. Coupled azimuth propulsors located in bow and in stern provide most efficient operation in ice conditions. Construction period of the lead ship Aker ARC 124 was 36 months from the keel laying to her handover to the customer.
The vessel was built under the technical supervision of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping to class Icebreaker 7.
The main function of the Ob icebreaker is escorting LNG carriers in the approach channel and water area of the port of Sabetta on the Yamal Peninsula where an LNG plant is being built - project Yamal LNG.
The vessel is designed in accordance with the latest environmental requirements: all solid and liquid wastes are stored on board and discharged ashore; all tanks containing contaminated liquids are double-hull protected except for treated wastewater tanks, ballast water treatment system.
Facilities for the crew comfortable stay on board: mess room for 20 people, officer mess room for 8 people, lounge / recreation room, sauna and shower room with a swimming pool, gym, office, conference room, galley with food pantries, laundry room with a linen locker, ironing and drying rooms.
